Indications

  • Single and mixed infestations of hookworm, roundworm, threadworm, whipworm, strongyloides, tapeworm, opisthorchi, hydatid

Description

  • Benzimidazole anthelmintic
  • Active against most nematodes and some cestodes
  • Vermicidal, ovicidal, and larvicidal activity
  • Inhibitory effect on tubulin polymerization

Pharmacology

  • Broad spectrum anthelmintic
  • Blocks glucose uptake in helminths
  • Depletes energy level leading to immobilization
  • Extensively metabolized, especially in the liver
  • Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract
  • Metabolite albendazole sulphoxide has anthelmintic activity
