Description
- Orally active cephalosporin antibiotic with bactericidal activity
- Effective against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
Indications
- Treatment for Upper Respiratory Tract Infections
- Treatment for Urinary Tract Infections
- Clinical efficacy against various pathogens
- High stability in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes
Pharmacology
- Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of bacteria
- Kills bacteria by interfering in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- Absorption around 40% to 50% with or without food
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, extendable to 14 days if required
- Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily according to infection severity
- Dosage recommendations for elderly, children, and in renal impairment cases
Interaction
- Potential increases in prothrombin times in some patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Majority of adverse reactions observed in clinical trials were mild and self-limiting
- Common gastrointestinal disturbances: diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain
- Other side effects such as headache, dizziness, hypersensitivity reactions, hematological and clinical chemistry changes
- Rare occurrences of pseudomembranous colitis and mild transient changes in liver and renal function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Caution advised when administered to nursing women
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with known hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Consideration for cross-allergenicity between penicillins and cephalosporins
- Administration with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Alteration of normal flora of the colon leading to antibiotic-associated diarrhea
- Recommendation against use in pregnancy or nursing mothers unless considered essential by the physician
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated in case of overdose
- No specific antidote available and not significantly removed by dialysis
- Adverse reactions in healthy volunteers receiving single doses
