Indications

• Bronchial asthma
• Chronic bronchitis
• Emphysema
• Other lung diseases

Pharmacology

• Long acting β2 adrenergic receptor agonist
• Stimulates β2 receptor
• Relaxes bronchial smooth muscle
• Inhibits release of endogenous spasmogens
• Increases mucocilliary clearance

Dosage & Administration

• Recommended dose for children 2-5 years: 10 mg
• Recommended dose for children 6-12 years: 10-20 mg
• Recommended initial dose for adults: 10 mg
• Can be increased to 20 mg for adults after 1-2 weeks

• Interacts with Succinylcholin
• Interacts with MAOIs (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors)
• Interacts with β2-blockers
• Interacts with Corticosteroids
• Interacts with Diuretics
• Interacts with Muscle relaxants
• Interacts with Sympathomimetic xanthine derivatives

Contraindications

• Hepatic impairment
• Liver cirrhosis
• Severely impaired liver function

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Caution during first trimester of pregnancy
• Caution during breastfeeding
• Potential influence on newborns
• Reported transient hypoglycemia in newborn pre-term infants

Precautions & Warnings

• Dose reduction in patients with severely impaired renal function
• Dose reduction in patients with genetic deficiencies of plasma cholinesterase
• Dose reduction in patients with severe ischemic heart disease

Overdose Effects

• Likely overdose symptoms: headache, anxiety, tremor, nausea, muscle cramps, palpitations, tachycardia, cardiac arrhythmias
• Possible laboratory findings: hyperglycaemia, lactacidosis, hypokalemia
