Indications
- Expectoration in upper respiratory inflammation (pharyngitis, laryngitis)
- Expectoration in acute bronchitis
- Expectoration in bronchial asthma
- Expectoration in chronic bronchitis
- Expectoration in bronchiectasis
- Expectoration in pulmonary tuberculosis
- Drainage in chronic sinusitis
- Drainage in otitis media with effusion
Pharmacology
- Reduction of viscosity of non-infected secretions in the respiratory tract
- Breaking of disulphide bonds in mucus
- Alteration of local ionic charges affecting mucus viscosity
- Change in composition of mucin secreted by respiratory mucosa
Dosage & Administration
- Adults (including elderly): Initial dosage of 2250 mg daily in divided doses, reduced to 1500 mg daily when a satisfactory response obtained
- Children: Normal daily dose is 20 mg/kg body weight in divided doses
- 2-5 years: 62.5-125 mg 4 times daily
- 6-12 years: 250 mg 3 times daily
- Infants: No established dosage

Contraindications
Contraindicated in active peptic ulceration and in patients with hypersensitivity to the drug
