- Anti-inflammatory action
- Inhibition of Phospholipase A2 enzyme
- Prostaglandin synthesis inhibition
- Immunosuppressive action
- Decreased release of certain chemicals
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage range of 3-120 mg/day
- Maintenance dose for most conditions within 3-18 mg/day range
- Titration to lowest effective dose
- Children's dosage range of 0.25-1.5 mg/kg/day
- Alternate day administration may be appropriate
- Withdrawal should not be abrupt
Interaction
- Metabolized in the liver
- Increased maintenance dose if co-administered with liver enzyme inducers
- Possible reduction of maintenance dose if co-administered with liver enzyme inhibitors
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the product or its ingredients
- Patients receiving live virus immunization

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Placental crossing
- Potential risk of intrauterine growth retardation
- Excretion in breast milk
- Unlikely systemic effects in the infant for doses up to 50 mg daily
- Possible adrenal suppression for infants of mothers taking higher doses
Precautions & Warnings
- Special caution for cardiac disease or congestive heart failure
- Salt and water retention risk
- Potassium supplementation may be necessary
- Caution in gastritis, oesophagitis, diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis
- Diabetes mellitus
- Osteoporosis
- Myasthenia gravis
- Renal insufficiency
- Psychotic tendency
- Corticosteroid-induced myopathy
- Liver failure
- Hypothyroidism and cirrhosis
