Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal & perennial allergic rhinitis
- Treatment of uncomplicated skin manifestations of chronic idiopathic urticaria
- Treatment of allergen induced asthma
Pharmacology
- H1 receptor antagonist
- No significant anticholinergic and antiserotonic effects
- Inhibition of histamine-mediated early phase of allergic reaction
- Reduction of migration of inflammatory cells and release of mediators associated with late phase of allergic reaction
- Peak plasma concentration of 257 mcg/L within one hour of administration
Dosage & Administration
- Oral dosage for adults and children 6 years and older: 1 tablet or 2 teaspoonfuls daily
- Oral dosage for children 2-6 years: 1 teaspoonful once daily or 1/2 teaspoonful twice daily
- Injectable dosage for adults and adolescents 12 years of age and older: 10 mg administered by intravenous injection
Interaction
- No clinically significant drug interactions with Theophylline, Azithromycin, Pseudoephedrine, Ketoconazole, or Erythromycin
Contraindications
- Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Cetirizine or hydroxyzine
Side Effects
- Common side effect: somnolence

- Cetirizine excreted in human milk
- Caution advised during pregnancy and lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution advised when driving or operating heavy machinery
Use in Special Populations
- Reduced clearance in patients with mild to moderate hepatic and renal impairment
- Safety demonstrated in pediatric patients aged 6 months to 5 years
- Reduced clearance in elderly patients proportional to the decrease in creatinine clearance
