Description

  • Benzimidazole anthelmintic
  • Active against most nematodes and some cestodes
  • Used for intestinal nematode infections
  • Used in higher doses for hydatid disease
  • Vermicidal, ovicidal, and larvicidal activity
  • Inhibitory effect on tubulin polymerization

Pharmacology

  • Broad spectrum anthelmintic
  • Blocks glucose uptake in susceptible helminths
  • Exerts anthelmintic effect by depleting energy levels
  • Immobilization of parasites
  • Binding and inhibition of parasite tubulin polymerization
  • Extensively metabolized, primarily in the liver
  • Poorly absorbed from gastrointestinal tract

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult dosage of 400 mg as a single dose for certain infestations
  • Recommended dosage for children based on age and infestation type
  • Specific dosage regimen for hydatid disease treatment
  • Additional dosage for cystic echinococcosis and alveolar hydatid disease

Contraindications
