Indications
- Relief of signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis
- Relief of signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis
Pharmacology
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
- Exhibits anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic properties
Dosage & Administration
- Nabumetone 500 mg Tablet: Oral
- Nabumetone 750 mg Tablet: Oral
- Nabumetone 1000 mg Tablet: Mix 1 tablet thoroughly in a glass (250 ml) of pure water and drink it completely
- Recommended starting dose is 1000 mg taken as a single dose
- Some patients may obtain more symptomatic relief from 1500 mg to 2000 mg per day
- Twice-daily dosing may be considered
- Maximum starting doses for patients with moderate or severe renal insufficiency
- Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients not established
Interaction
- NSAIDs may diminish the antihypertensive effect of ACE-inhibitors
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to nabumetone or its excipients
- Patients with asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
- Treatment of peri-operative pain in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal: Diarrhea, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, constipation, flatulence, nausea, positive stool guaiac, dry mouth, gastritis, stomatitis, vomiting
- Central Nervous System: Dizziness, headache, fatigue, increased sweating, insomnia, nervousness, somnolence
- Dermatologic: Pruritus, rash
- Special Senses: Tinnitus
- Miscellaneous: Edema
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C
- Recommended for use during pregnancy only if dearly needed
- Not recommended for use in nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Associated with renal papillary necrosis and other abnormal renal pathology during long-term administration to animals
- Associated with renal toxicity in patients with conditions leading to a reduction in renal blood flow or blood volume
- Discontinuation of NSAID therapy is typically followed by recovery to the pretreatment state
Overdose Effects
- Symptoms following acute NSAIDs overdoses are usually limited to lethargy, drowsiness, nausea, and vomiting
- Gastrointestinal bleeding can occur
- Hypertension, acute renal failure, respiratory depression, and coma may occur but are rare
- Managed by symptomatic and supportive care following a NSAID overdose
- No specific antidotes
