Indications

  • Treatment of iron deficiency anaemia in adult patients
  • Intolerance to oral iron
  • Non-dialysis dependent chronic kidney disease

Description

  • Colloidal iron (III) hydroxide in complex with Carboxymaltose
  • Carbohydrate polymer that releases iron

Dosage & Administration

  • Stepwise approach to determination and administration of iron dose
  • Calculation of individual iron need based on body weight and haemoglobin level
  • Maximum recommended cumulative dose of 1000 mg of iron per week

Interaction

  • Formal drug interaction studies not performed

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to the active substance or any excipients
  • Serious hypersensitivity to other parenteral iron products
  • Anaemia not attributed to iron deficiency
  • Evidence of iron overload or disturbances in iron utilisation

Side Effects

  • Infrequent and usually mild side effects
  • Nausea, headache, dizziness, hypertension, injection site reactions
  • Hypersensitivity, dysgeusia, tachycardia, hypotension, flushing, dyspnoea, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, pruritus, urticaria, erythema, rash, myalgia, back pain, arthralgia, muscle spasms, pyrexia, fatigue, chest pain, oedema peripheral, chills

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled trials in pregnant women
  • Animal data suggests potential influence on fetal skeletal development
  • Unlikely risk to breast-fed child based on limited data

Precautions & Warnings

  • Serious hypersensitivity reactions with potential life-threatening consequences
  • Monitor for signs of hypersensitivity during and after administration
  • Transient elevations in systolic blood pressure and laboratory test alterations
  • Immediate availability of personnel and therapies for treatment of serious reactions

Use in Special Populations

  • Maximum daily injection dose of 200 mg iron for haemodialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease patients
  • Not recommended in children under 14 years

Overdose Effects

  • Potential accumulation of iron in storage sites leading to hemosiderosis
  • Monitoring of iron parameters for recognition of iron accumulation
  • Consideration of iron chelator use if iron accumulation has occurred
