Indications

  • Treatment of iron deficiency anaemia in adult patients with intolerance to oral iron
  • Treatment of iron deficiency anaemia in adult patients with non-dialysis dependent chronic kidney disease

Chemical Composition

  • Colloidal iron (III) hydroxide in complex with Carboxymaltose

Dosage & Administration

  • Stepwise approach for determination, calculation, and administration of iron doses
  • Individual iron need determined based on patient's body weight and haemoglobin (Hb) level

Maximum Iron Dose

  • 15 mg iron/kg body weight for intravenous injection
  • 20 mg iron/kg body weight for intravenous infusion
  • 1000 mg of iron per week

Post-Iron Repletion Assessments

  • Re-assessment by the clinician based on the individual patient's condition

Interaction

  • No formal drug interaction studies performed

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to the active substance or any of its excipients
  • Known serious hypersensitivity to other parenteral iron products
  • Anaemia not attributed to iron deficiency
  • Evidence of iron overload or disturbances in the utilisation of iron

Side Effects

  • Infrequent, mild side effects
  • Common: nausea, headache, dizziness, hypertension, injection site reactions
  • Uncommon: hypersensitivity, dysgeusia, tachycardia, hypotension, flushing
  • Rare: anaphylactoid reactions, loss of consciousness, anxiety, phlebitis

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled trials in pregnant women
  • Careful benefit/risk evaluation required
  • Unlikely risk to the breast-fed child

Precautions & Warnings

  • Serious hypersensitivity reactions reported
  • Monitor patients for signs and symptoms of hypersensitivity
  • Transient elevations in systolic blood pressure may occur
  • Laboratory test alterations in the 24 hours following administration

Use in Special Populations

  • Single maximum daily injection dose of 200 mg iron for haemodialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease patients
  • Not recommended in children under 14 years

Overdose Effects

  • Excessive dosages may lead to accumulation of iron in storage sites
  • Monitor iron parameters such as serum ferritin and transferrin saturation
  • Consider the use of an iron chelator if iron accumulation has occurred
