Indications
- Treatment of iron deficiency anaemia in adult patients who have intolerance to oral iron
- Treatment of iron deficiency anaemia in adult patients with non-dialysis dependent chronic kidney disease
Description
- Colloidal iron (III) hydroxide in complex with Carboxymaltose
- Carbohydrate polymer that releases iron
Dosage & Administration
- Stepwise approach for posology of Ferric Carboxymaltose
- Determination of individual iron need based on body weight and haemoglobin level
- Calculation and administration of iron dose(s) based on individual iron need
- Post-iron repletion assessments by the clinician
Interaction
- Formal drug interaction studies have not been performed
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance, Ferric Carboxymaltose, or any of its excipients
- Serious hypersensitivity to other parenteral iron products
- Anaemia not attributed to iron deficiency
- Evidence of iron overload or disturbances in iron utilization
Side Effects
- Infrequent and mild side effects
- Common side effects: nausea, headache, dizziness, hypertension, injection site reactions
- Uncommon side effects: dysgeusia, tachycardia, hypotension, diarrhea, myalgia
- Rare side effects: anaphylactoid reactions, loss of consciousness, bronchospasm
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled trials in pregnant women
- Careful benefit/risk evaluation required for use during pregnancy
- Unlikely risk to breastfed child based on limited data
Precautions & Warnings
- Serious hypersensitivity reactions reported
- Monitor patients for signs and symptoms of hypersensitivity
- Transient elevations in systolic blood pressure may occur
- Laboratory test alterations in the 24 hours following administration
Use in Special Populations
- Maximum daily injection dose in haemodialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease patients
- Not recommended in children under 14 years
Overdose Effects
- Excessive dosages may lead to accumulation of iron in storage sites
- Monitoring of iron parameters such as serum ferritin and transferrin saturation may help in recognizing iron accumulation
