Indications
- Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis in adults
- Acute maxillary sinusitis
- Community-acquired pneumonia
- Pharyngitis or tonsillitis
- Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections
- Acute otitis media in pediatric patients
- Treatment and prophylaxis of disseminated mycobacterial infections
- Helicobacter pylori infection and duodenal ulcer disease in adults
Pharmacology
- Inhibits microsomal protein synthesis
- Binds to 50S subunit of bacterial ribosome
- Active against most Gram-positive bacteria
- More acid-stable than Erythromycin
- Twice the activity of Erythromycin against H. influenzae
- Inactivity against most species of Gram-negative bacteria

- Dosage for adults
- Combination dosing regimens for H. pylori infection

- Dosage for renal and hepatic impairment
Interaction
- Contraindicated with specific medications
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to clarithromycin or macrolide antibacterial drugs
- History of cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction associated with prior use of clarithromycin

Pregnancy & Lactation

Precautions & Warnings

- Avoid in patients with known QT prolongation or receiving drugs known to prolong the QT interval
- Increased risk of all-cause mortality in patients with coronary artery disease
- Evaluate for Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea if diarrhea occurs

- Safety and effectiveness for prevention of disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) disease in pediatric patients with advanced HIV infection
