Dosage Instructions

Contraindications

Precautions & Warnings

  • Increased risk of hypoglycemia in initial weeks of treatment
  • Caution in patients with G6PD-deficiency
  • Regular monitoring of thyroid-stimulating hormone levels recommended for hypothyroidism
  • Long-term treatment associated with decrease in vitamin B12 serum levels, monitor B12 levels
  • Assess renal function before initiation and annually thereafter

Special Populations

  • Insufficient data for pediatric use
  • Assessment of GFR required before initiation of treatment with metformin-containing products

Overdose Effects

  • Acute overdosage may lead to severe life-threatening hypoglycemia
  • Hypoglycemia not seen with metformin doses up to 85g, but lactic acidosis can occur
