Indications

  • Acute Bacterial Sinusitis
  • Acute Bacterial Exacerbation of Chronic Bronchitis
  • Community Acquired Pneumonia
  • Skin and Skin Structure Infections: Uncomplicated and Complicated
  • Complicated Intra-Abdominal Infections

Dosage

  • 400 mg once daily for Acute Bacterial Sinusitis for 10 days
  • 400 mg once daily for Acute Bacterial Exacerbation of Chronic Bronchitis for 5 days
  • 400 mg once daily for Community Acquired Pneumonia for 7-14 days
  • 400 mg once daily for Uncomplicated Skin and Skin Structure Infections for 7 days
  • 400 mg once daily for Complicated Skin and Skin Structure Infections for 7-21 days
  • 400 mg once daily for Complicated Intra-Abdominal Infections for 5-14 days

Administration

  • Intravenous infusion over a period of 60 minutes
  • Check the bag for minute leaks by squeezing the inner bag firmly
  • Do not use if the solution is cloudy or a precipitate is present
  • Do not use flexible bags in series connections
  • Close flow control clamp of administration set
  • Remove cover from port at bottom of bag
  • Insert piercing pin of administration set into port with a twisting motion until the pin is firmly seated
  • Suspend bag from hanger
  • Squeeze and release drip chamber to establish proper fluid level in chamber during infusion
  • Open flow control clamp to expel air from set
  • Regulate the rate of administration with flow control clamp

Interaction

  • No interaction with oral antacids, sucralfate, multivitamins, didanosine, or metal cations
  • No co-administration with any solution containing multivalent cations, e.g., magnesium, through the same intravenous line
  • Enhanced anticoagulant effects with warfarin or its derivatives
  • Potential for increased risks of CNS stimulation and convulsions when combined with a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug
  • Potential for pharmacodynamic interaction with drugs that prolong the QTc interval of the electrocardiogram

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to Moxifloxacin or other quinolone antibacterials

Side Effects

  • Common side effects: headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, dizziness, pyrexia, insomnia
  • Less common side effects: neutropenia, palpitations, tachycardia, bradycardia, vertigo, tinnitus, dry mouth, gastritis, edema, fatigue, malaise, hyperglycemia, anorexia, hyperlipidemia, hypoglycemia, dehydration, back pain, arthralgia

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy Category C
  • Excretion in breast milk of rats and potentially in human milk
  • Consideration for discontinuation of nursing

Precautions & Warnings

  • Increased risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture
  • Exacerbation of muscle weakness in persons with myasthenia gravis
  • Risk of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD)

Use in Special Populations

  • Safety and effectiveness not established in pediatric patients and adolescents less than 18 years of age
  • Increased risk for severe tendon disorders in geriatric patients

Therapeutic Class

  • 4-Quinolone preparations
