Indications

  • Monotherapy for partial-onset seizures in adults and adolescents
  • Adjunctive therapy for partial-onset seizures in adults, adolescents, children, and infants
  • Treatment of myoclonic seizures in adults and adolescents
  • Treatment of primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in adults and adolescents

Description

  • Precise mechanism of action is unknown
  • Minimal activity in submaximal stimulation and threshold tests
  • Inhibition of burst firing without affecting normal neuronal excitability

Dosage

  • Initial starting dose of 250 mg twice daily for adults and adolescents
  • Maximum dose of 1500 mg twice daily
  • Different dosage recommendations for pediatric population
  • Tablet formulation not suitable for infants and young children

Administration

  • Oral administration with sufficient quantity of liquid
  • Administered in two equally divided doses
  • Can be taken with or without food

Interaction

  • No influence on serum concentrations of existing antiepileptic medicinal products
  • Interaction with probenecid, methotrexate, and laxatives reported
  • Effect of food and alcohol on absorption

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to the active substance or other pyrrolidone derivatives
