Description
- Benzimidazole anthelmintic
- Active against most nematodes and some cestodes
- Vermicidal, ovicidal, and larvicidal activity
- Inhibitory effect on tubulin polymerization
Pharmacology
- Broad spectrum anthelmintic
- Exerts anthelmintic effect by blocking glucose uptake
- Depletes energy level in susceptible helminths
- Immobilizes parasites
- Metabolized in the liver
- Poorly absorbed from gastrointestinal tract
- Extensive first-pass metabolism
- Principal metabolite albendazole sulphoxide
Dosage & Administration
- 400 mg single dose for enterobius vermicularis
- 400 mg daily for strongyloidiasis or taeniasis
- 200 mg recommended dose for children of 1-2 years
- 400 mg twice daily for patients weighing over 60 kg in hydatid disease
- 15 mg/kg body weight daily for patients weighing less than 60 kg in hydatid disease
- 400 mg once daily for five days in giardiasis

Contraindications
- Not recommended in neonates
- Possible dosage reduction in children weighing less than 10 kg
- Avoid in pregnant women
- No evidence to suggest dose alteration in renal, hepatic, or cardiac failure
