Description

  • Benzimidazole anthelmintic
  • Active against most nematodes and some cestodes
  • Vermicidal, ovicidal, and larvicidal activity
  • Inhibitory effect on tubulin polymerization

Pharmacology

  • Broad spectrum anthelmintic
  • Exerts anthelmintic effect by blocking glucose uptake
  • Depletes energy level in susceptible helminths
  • Immobilizes parasites
  • Metabolized in the liver
  • Poorly absorbed from gastrointestinal tract
  • Extensive first-pass metabolism
  • Principal metabolite albendazole sulphoxide

Dosage & Administration

  • 400 mg single dose for enterobius vermicularis
  • 400 mg daily for strongyloidiasis or taeniasis
  • 200 mg recommended dose for children of 1-2 years
  • 400 mg twice daily for patients weighing over 60 kg in hydatid disease
  • 15 mg/kg body weight daily for patients weighing less than 60 kg in hydatid disease
  • 400 mg once daily for five days in giardiasis

Contraindications

  • Not recommended in neonates
  • Possible dosage reduction in children weighing less than 10 kg
  • Avoid in pregnant women
