Indications
- Productive cough
- Acute and chronic inflammatory disorders of upper and lower respiratory tracts
- Asthmatic bronchitis
- Bronchiectasis
- Chronic pneumonia
Pharmacology
- Ambroxol is the active metabolite of bromhexine
- Greater bronchosecretolytic effect than bromhexine
- Improves sputum rheology
- Hydrating mechanism for liquefaction of mucus
- Stimulates production of phospholipids of surfactant
- Reduces bronchial hyperactivity
- Anti-inflammatory properties
- Improves airway patency in COPD patients
Dosage & Administration
- Average daily dose after meal
- Pediatric Drops dosage for different age groups
- Syrup dosage for different age groups
- Sustained release capsule dosage for adults and children over 12 years old
Interaction
- Not to be taken simultaneously with antitussives
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Ambroxol or Bromhexine
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal side effects like epigastric pain
- Occasional stomach overfill feeling
- Rare allergic responses such as eruption, urticaria or angioneurotic edema
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Teratogenic and fetal toxicity studies
- Advised not to use during 1st trimester

Precautions & Warnings
- Cautious use in patients with gastric and duodenal ulceration
- Cautious use in patients with convulsive disorders
- Caution for patients with hepatic and renal insufficiency
