Pharmacology

  • Potent non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
  • Anti-rheumatic
  • Analgesic
  • Antipyretic
  • Uricosuric effect
  • Inhibits prostaglandin biosynthesis
  • Rapid and complete absorption from the gastro-intestinal tract

Dosage & Administration

  • Adults: 75-150 mg daily in 2 to 3 divided doses
  • Children: 1-3 mg of diclofenac/kg body wt. daily in divided doses
  • Elderly patients: Lowest effective dosage recommended
  • Maximum daily dose for Suppository: 150 mg
  • External use: 2-4 g applied to the skin 3-4 times daily

Interaction

  • May increase plasma concentrations of lithium and digoxin
  • Isolated reports of increased risk of haemorrhage with anticoagulant therapy
  • Can be given together with oral antidiabetic agents without influencing their clinical effect
  • Cases of nephrotoxicity reported in patients receiving cyclosporin and diclofenac concomitantly
  • Caution necessary when considering concomitant therapy of NSAID and quinolones

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitive to any ingredient of the product
  • Peptic ulcer
  • Hypersensitivity to Diclofenac like other non-steroid anti-inflammatory agents
  • Not to be used under occlusive airtight dressings

  • Peripheral edema
  • Skin reactions like rash and eczema
  • Local irritation and reddening of the skin

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Employed only for compelling reasons during pregnancy
  • Lowest effective dose recommended
  • Not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy
  • Not recommended during lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Close observation for peptic ulceration or gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Not to come in contact with the eyes or mucus membranes
  • Not to be taken by mouth
