Description
- Indicated for the treatment of hypertension
- may be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents
- Blocks the vasoconstrictor effects of angiotensin II
- Individualized dosage required
- Usual recommended starting dose of 20 mg once daily
- Dose may be increased to 40 mg for further reduction in blood pressure
- No initial dosage adjustment recommended for elderly patients
- No initial dosage adjustment recommended for patients with moderate to marked renal impairment
- No initial dosage adjustment recommended for patients with moderate to marked hepatic dysfunction
- Recommended to consider lower starting dose for patients with possible depletion of intravascular volume
- May be administered with or without food
- Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients not established
- No significant drug interactions reported with digoxin or warfarin
- Bioavailability not altered by co-administration of antacids
- Not metabolized by the cytochrome P450 system
- No expected interactions with drugs that inhibit, induce, or are metabolized by P450 enzymes
- Co-administration with NSAIDs may result in deterioration of renal function
- Attenuation of antihypertensive effect by NSAIDs including selective COX-2 inhibitors
- Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to any component
- Evaluated for safety in more than 3825 patients/subjects
- Well tolerated with adverse reactions similar to placebo
- Gender, age, and race groups showed no differences in adverse reactions
- Adverse reactions not dose related
- Incidence of withdrawals due to adverse reactions was low
- Adverse reactions included dizziness, back pain, bronchitis, diarrhea, headache, hyperglycemia, and more
- Discontinue when pregnancy is detected
- Can cause injury and death to the developing fetus
- Not known whether excreted in human milk
- Potential adverse effects on the nursing infant
- Inhibiting the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system may lead to changes in renal function
- Treatment associated with oliguria, progressive azotemia, acute renal failure, and death in susceptible individuals
- No experience of overdose reported
- Likely effects of overdose are hypotension and tachycardia
- Gastric lavage or induction of emesis may be considered if intake is recent
- Active support of the cardiovascular system required in case of clinically significant hypotension
