Indications
- Treatment of onychomycosis of the toenail
- Treatment of onychomycosis of the fingernail
- Treatment of Tinea Capitis
- Treatment of fungal infection of the skin
- Treatment of yeast infections of the skin
- Treatment of Pityriasis versicolor
Pharmacology
- Inhibits biosynthesis of Ergosterol
- Fungicidal against Tricophyton Mentagrophyte
- Active against Trichophyton Rubrum
- Increase membrane permeability
Dosage & Administration
- 250 mg tablet once daily for 6 weeks for fingernail onychomycosis
- 250 mg tablet once daily for 12 weeks for toenail onychomycosis
- 125 mg/day of granules for body weight <25 kg
- 187.5 mg/day of granules for body weight 25-35 kg
- 250 mg/day of granules for body weight >35 kg
- Application of cream once or twice daily
- Application of 1% spray once or twice daily
Interaction
- Inhibitor of CYP450 2D6 isozyme
- Requires careful monitoring when co-administered with specific drug classes

- Hypersensitivity to terbinafine

- Not recommended for patients with chronic or active liver disease
- Assessment of pre-existing liver disease recommended
- Pretreatment serum transaminase test advised
Use in Special Populations
- Safety and efficacy not established in pediatric patients
- No evidence of different dosages or side-effects in elderly patients
Overdose Effects
- Limited clinical experience
- Doses up to 5 gm taken without serious adverse reactions
- Symptoms of overdose include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain
