Description
- Emcin ointment is indicated for the topical treatment of impetigo (skin diseases) due to Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. It is also indicated in folliculitis, furunculosis.

Pharmacology
- Antibiotic produced by fermentation using the organism Pseudomonas fluorescens
- Active against Staphylococcus aureus including MRSA and Streptococcus pyogenes
- Inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to bacterial isoleucyl transfer-RNA synthetase
Dosage and administration
- Apply to affected area 3 times daily for up to 10 days
- Safety and effectiveness established for age range of 2 months to 16 years
- Pediatric use supported by evidence from adequate and well-controlled studies

Contraindications
- Contraindicated in individuals with history of hypersensitivity reactions to Mupirocin or any of the components of the preparation

Precautions and warnings
- Not for ophthalmic or intra-nasal use
- Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms
- Avoid contact with eyes when used on the face
- Not suitable in conjunction with cannulae and at the site of central venous cannulation
- Discontinue usage if sensitization or severe local irritation occurs
- Risk of dilution and loss of stability if mixed with other preparations
