Dosage Administration

  • Adolescents Adults:
    • Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis: 250 mg b.i.d. for 5-10 days
    • Acute Maxillary Sinusitis: 250 mg b.i.d. for 10 days
    • Exacerbation of Chronic Bronchitis: 250-500 mg b.i.d. for 10 days
  • Pregnancy Use: Safe in later pregnancy for urinary and other infections
  • Breastfeeding Use: Excreted into breast milk at low levels

Pharmacology

  • Cefuroxime:
    • Type: Bactericidal
    • Action: Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis
  • Clavulanic Acid:
    • Type: Beta-lactamase Inhibitor
    • Action: Irreversibly binds to beta-lactamase enzymes

Interaction

  • Probenecid: Increases serum concentration
  • Gastric Acidity-Reducing Drugs: May reduce bioavailability
