Indications

Treatment of essential hypertension
Treatment of salt and fluid retention associated with congestive heart failure

Pharmacology

Diuretic antihypertensive
Causes vasodilation
Inhibits the passage of calcium and other ions
Reduces total peripheral and arteriolar resistance

Dosage & Administration

One tablet daily in the morning
Combined use with other categories of anti-hypertensive agents
Safety and effectiveness not established in pediatric patients

Interaction

Potentiation with other antihypertensive drugs
Decrease in arterial responsiveness to norepinephrine
Risk of lithium toxicity when given concomitantly with diuretics

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to sulfonamides
Severe renal failure
Hepatic encephalopathy or severe hepatic failure
Hypokalaemia

Precautions & Warnings

Symptoms: allergies, skin rashes, epigastric pain, nausea, photosensitivity, dizziness, weakness, paraesthesia
Supportive and symptomatic treatment for correcting electrolyte abnormalities
