Pharmacology
- Block COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes
- Decrease prostaglandin synthesis

Dosage & Administration
- Oral use
- Take with water after meals
- Dosage varies for different indications and age groups
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Naproxen
- Patients with asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
- Perioperative pain in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal: Heartburn, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, dyspepsia
- Central Nervous System: Headache, vertigo, drowsiness
- Dermatological: Pruritus (itching), purpura
- Cardiovascular: Edema, palpitation
- Others: Visual disturbances, hearing disturbances
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Adverse effects on the fetus
- Delay in parturition
- Possible risks to the fetus in the first and third trimesters
- Excretion in small amounts in breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Renal effects: Caution in patients with impaired renal function
- Monitoring of serum creatinine and/or creatinine clearance
- Caution in patients with significantly impaired renal function
- Hepatic effects: Reports of moderate to severe jaundice
Interaction
- Diminished antihypertensive effect with ACE inhibitors
- Delayed absorption with antacids & sucralafate
- Increased adverse effects with aspirin
- Reduced natriuretic effect with diuretics
- Enhanced toxicity with Methotrexate
- Increased risk of GI bleeding with Warfarin and Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI)
