Interaction
- Diminishes antihypertensive effect of ACE inhibitors
- Delays the absorption of Napxon-P by antacids & Sucralfate
- Increases adverse effects when taken with aspirin
- Reduces the natriuretic effect of diuretics
- Enhances the toxicity of Methotrexate
- Increases the risk of GI bleeding when taken with Warfarin or Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI)
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Naproxen
- Previous asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions to Aspirin or other NSAIDs
- Perioperative pain in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal effects like heartburn, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, dyspepsia
- Central Nervous System effects like headache, vertigo, drowsiness
- Dermatological effects like itching, purpura
- Cardiovascular effects like edema, palpitation
- Other effects like visual disturbances, hearing disturbances
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Adverse effects on the fetus
- Causes a delay in parturition in animals
- Associated with premature closure of the ductus arteriosus and severe pulmonary hypertension in infants born to mothers taking Naproxen
- Excreted in small amounts in breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Renal effects, including renal papillary necrosis and abnormal renal pathology
- Reports of acute interstitial nephritis, hematuria, proteinuria, and occasionally nephrotic syndrome
- Eliminated primarily by the kidneys
- Hepatic effects including reports of moderate to severe jaundice
