Indications
- Treatment of Parkinson's disease
- Relieves rigidity and bradykinesia
- Management of tremor and dysphagia
- Increases motor recovery after stroke
Description
- Levodopa is a metabolic precursor of dopamine
- Carbidopa is a dopa decarboxylase (DDC) inhibitor
- Allows more Levodopa to reach the brain and be converted to dopamine
Dosage & Administration
- Initiate dosage with one tablet three or four times a day
- Titration may be required for optimum dosage
- Dosage adjustment based on patient response
- Individualized maintenance dose
Interaction
- Potential for symptomatic postural hypotension
- Possible decrease in bioavailability when ingested with certain medicines
- Concomitant therapy with selegiline may lead to severe orthostatic hypotension
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Carbidopa and Levodopa
- Narrow-angle glaucoma
- History of melanoma or suspicious undiagnosed skin lesions
Side Effects
- Dyskinesias including choreiform and dystonic movements
- Nausea and gastrointestinal effects
- Hypotensive episodes and hypertension
- Anaemia and thrombocytopenia
- Neurological effects such as dizziness and hallucinations
- Skin reactions and dark urine
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Uncertain effects on human pregnancy
- Possible hazards in women of childbearing potential
- Unknown excretion in human milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Not recommended for medicine-induced extrapyramidal reactions
- Careful observation for development of depression and suicidal tendencies
- Cautious administration in patients with cardiovascular or pulmonary disease
Use in Special Populations
- Not recommended for patients below the age of 18 years
