Indications
- Relief of signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis
- Relief of signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis
Pharmacology
- Exhibits anti-inflammatory properties
- Exhibits analgesic properties
- Exhibits antipyretic properties
- Mode of action is inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis
Dosage & Administration
- Available in 500 mg & 750 mg tablets
- 1000 mg tablet: To be mixed thoroughly in a glass of water and consumed
- Recommended starting dose is 1000 mg
- Maximum recommended dose is 2000 mg per day
Interaction
- May diminish the antihypertensive effect of ACE-inhibitors
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to nabumetone
- Not to be given to patients with asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
- Contradicted in peri-operative pain in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal effects such as diarrhea, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, etc.
- Central Nervous System effects like dizziness, headache, fatigue, etc.
- Dermatologic effects including pruritus and rash
- Special Senses effects like tinnitus
- Miscellaneous effects like edema
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C
- Not recommended during the third trimester of pregnancy
- Not recommended for use in nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Associated with renal papillary necrosis and abnormal renal pathology during long-term administration
- May result in a dose-dependent decrease in prostaglandin synthesis and reduction of renal blood flow
- Patients at greatest risk are those with impaired renal function, heart failure, liver dysfunction, etc.
Overdose Effects
- Symptoms may include lethargy, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, gastrointestinal bleeding
- Rare symptoms may include hypertension, acute renal failure, respiratory depression, coma
- Patients should be managed by symptomatic and supportive care following an overdose
- No specific antidotes
