Description
- Relieves signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis
- Exhibits anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic properties
- Recommended starting dose is 1000 mg taken as a single dose with or without food
- Can be given in either a single or twice-daily dose
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to nabumetone or its excipients
- Symptoms following acute NSAIDs overdoses are usually limited to lethargy, drowsiness, nausea, and vomiting
- Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if dearly needed
Dosage
- Nabumetone 500 mg & 750 mg Tablet: Oral
- Nabumetone 1000 mg Tablet: Mix 1 tablet thoroughly in a glass (250 ml) of pure water and drink it completely
- Recommended starting dose is 1000 mg taken as a single dose with or without food
- Dosages greater than 2000 mg per day have not been studied
- Caution should be taken in prescribing Nabumetone to patients with moderate or severe renal insufficiency
Mode of Action
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
- Inhibits prostaglandin synthesis
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal: Diarrhea, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, constipation, flatulence, nausea
- Central Nervous System: Dizziness, headache, fatigue, increased sweating, insomnia
- Dermatologic: Pruritus, rash
- Special Senses: Tinnitus
- Miscellaneous: Edema
Interaction
- NSAIDs may diminish the antihypertensive effect of ACE-inhibitors
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to nabumetone or its excipients
- Not to be given to patients who have experienced asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C
- Use during pregnancy only if dearly needed
- Not recommended for use in nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Associated with renal papillary necrosis and other abnormal renal pathology during long-term administration to animals
- Renal toxicity often associated with conditions leading to a reduction in renal blood flow or blood volume
- Discontinuation of NSAID therapy is typically followed by recovery to the pretreatment state
Overdose Effects
- Symptoms include lethargy, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, and epigastric pain
- Gastrointestinal bleeding can occur
- Hypertension, acute renal failure, respiratory depression, and coma may occur but are rare
- Managed by symptomatic and supportive care following a NSAID overdose
- Emesis, activated charcoal, and/or osmotic cathartic may be indicated in patients seen within 4 hours of ingestion
