Indications
- Treatment of panic disorder with or without agoraphobia
- Adjunct treatment of the Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome
- Treatment of seizures
- Long-term use not systematically studied
Pharmacology
- Exhibits anticonvulsive, sedative, muscle relaxing, and anxiolytic effects
- Enhances GABAergic neurotransmission at inhibitory synapses
- Rapidly suppresses different types of paroxysmal activity including certain seizures
DosageAndAdministration
- Initial dose for adults with seizure disorders should not exceed 1.5 mg/day divided into three doses
- Initial dose for adults with panic disorder is 0.25 mg given in two divided doses
- Dosage for pediatric patients is based on age and body weight
- Different dosages for oral and injection administration
Interaction
- Does not appear to alter the pharmacokinetics of phenytoin, carbamazepine, or phenobarbital
- Effect on the metabolism of other drugs not investigated
Contraindications
- History of hypersensitivity to benzodiazepines
- Clinical or biochemical evidence of significant liver disease
- Contraindicated in acute narrow angle glaucoma
