Indications

  • Short-term treatment of bacterial infections at various sites such as upper respiratory tract, lower respiratory tract, genito-urinary tract, skin and soft tissue, bone and joint infections, and more

Composition

  • 375 mg tablet: Each film coated tablet contains Amoxicillin 250 mg and Clavulanic Acid 125 mg
  • 625 mg tablet: Each film coated tablet contains Amoxicillin 500 mg and Clavulanic Acid 125 mg
  • 1 gm tablet: Each film coated tablet contains Amoxicillin 875 mg and Clavulanic Acid 125 mg
  • Powder for Suspension: Each 5 ml reconstituted suspension contains Amoxicillin 125 mg and Clavulanic Acid 31.25 mg
  • Powder for Suspension (Forte): Each 5 ml reconstituted suspension contains Amoxicillin 400 mg and Clavulanic Acid 57.5 mg
  • 1.2 gm Injection: Each vial contains sterile mixture of Amoxicillin Sodium (equiv. to Amoxicillin 1 gm) and Clavulanate Potassium (equiv. to Clavulanic Acid 200 mg)
  • 0.6 gm injection: Each vial contains sterile mixture of Amoxicillin Sodium (equiv. to Amoxicillin 500 mg) and Clavulanate Potassium (equiv. to Clavulanic Acid 100 mg)

Pharmacology

  • Antibacterial combination of Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid with broad spectrum bactericidal activity

Dosage

  • Varied dosage for adults, children over 12 years, and children of different age groups depending on the severity of infections

Administration

  • Oral dosage form: Can be taken without regard to meals, absorption enhanced when taken at the start of a meal
  • IV injection: Administered intravenously by injection (over 2 minutes) or slow intravenous infusion (30 minutes)

Interaction

  • Prolongation of bleeding time and prothrombin time reported in some patients receiving Co-amoxiclav, potential reduction of efficacy of oral contraceptives

Contraindications

  • History of Penicillin hypersensitivity, possible cross-sensitivity with other beta-lactam antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Uncommon side effects including diarrhea, pseudomembranous colitis, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, candidiasis, hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice, rashes, angioedema, and anaphylaxis

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Use in pregnancy not recommended unless considered essential by the physician, trace quantities detected in breast milk during lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Use with care in patients on anticoagulation therapy or with severe hepatic dysfunction, dosage adjustment for patients with renal impairment

Use in Special Populations

  • Dose adjustment in case of patients with renal impairment, administration in hepatic impairment with caution

Overdose Effects

  • Unlikely to occur, gastrointestinal symptoms and disturbance of fluid and electrolyte balances may be evident, removal by haemodialysis if needed

Therapeutic Class

Reconstitution

  • IV injection reconstituted with Water for Injection BP, should not be mixed with certain fluids

Storage Conditions

  • Stored below 25°C, protected from light and moisture, reconstituted suspension should be kept in the refrigerator and used within 7 days, reconstituted vial must be used within 20 minutes
