Indications
- Treatment of acute and chronic psychoses
- Treatment of schizophrenia
- Treatment of bipolar disorder
- Maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder
- Prevention of recurrence of manic, depressive or mixed episodes
Pharmacology
- Belongs to dibenzothiazepine derivatives
- Acts as an antagonist at multiple neurotransmitter receptors
- Mechanism of action is unknown
- Antagonism of dopamine D2 and serotonin 5HT2 receptors
Dosage & Administration
- Administered twice daily for acute and chronic psychoses, including schizophrenia
- Administered twice daily for manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder
- Administered once daily at bedtime for depressive episodes associated with bipolar disorder
- Administered twice daily for maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder in combination with mood stabilizers
- Dosage titration and adjustments based on clinical response and tolerability
Interaction
- Caution with concomitant use of medicines causing electrolyte imbalance or increasing QT interval
- Co-administration with other drugs affecting clearance
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Quetiapine

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use only if benefits justify potential risks during pregnancy
- Avoid breastfeeding while taking Quetiapine
Precautions & Warnings
- Risk of suicidal thoughts or clinical worsening
- Caution in patients with cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease
- Caution in patients with history of seizures
- Consideration of tardive dyskinesia and EPS
- Monitoring for neuroleptic malignant syndrome
- Caution in patients with cardiovascular disease or QT prolongation
- Monitoring for neutropenia, hyperglycemia, and diabetes mellitus
Use in Special Populations
- Caution in the elderly
- Not indicated for use in children and adolescents below 18 years of age
Overdose Effects
- No specific antidote
- Supportive care and monitoring in case of overdose
