Indications
- Treatment of Acute and chronic psychoses
- Treatment of schizophrenia
- Treatment of Bipolar Disorder
- Maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder
Pharmacology
- Belongs to dibenzothiazepine derivatives
- Antagonist at serotonin 5HT1A and 5HT2 receptors
- Antagonist at dopamine D1 and D2 receptors
- Antagonist at histamine H1 receptors
- Antagonist at adrenergic α1 and α2 receptors
Dosage & Administration
- Administered twice daily
- Total daily dose for the first four days of therapy
- Usual effective dose range of 300-450 mg/day
- Usual effective dose range of 400 to 800mg/day
Interaction
- Caution should be exercised when used concomitantly with medicines known to cause electrolyte imbalance
- Co-administration with thioridazine or carbamazepine can increase clearance
Contraindications
- Contra-indicated in patients who are hypersensitive to it
Side Effects
- Commonly reported adverse reactions: somnolence, dizziness, dry mouth
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety and efficacy during human pregnancy not established
- Use during pregnancy only if benefits justify potential risks
- Avoid breast-feeding while taking Quetiapine
Precautions & Warnings
- Associated with an increased risk of suicidal thoughts and self-harm
- Caution in patients with known cardiovascular disease
- Caution in patients with a history of seizures
Use in Special Populations
- Caution in the elderly
- Not indicated for use in children and adolescents below 18 years of age
Overdose Effects
- Survival reported in acute overdoses of up to 30 grams
- No specific antidote
- In cases of severe intoxication, intensive care procedures are recommended
