Indications
- Treatment of functional symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
Pharmacology
- Selective alpha1 adrenoceptor blocking agent
- Relaxes smooth muscles in bladder neck and prostate
- Improves urine flow rate
- Reduces symptoms of BPH
- Complete absorption (90%) under fasting conditions
- Extensively metabolized by cytochrome P 450 enzymes in the liver
- High plasma protein binding (94% to 99%)
- Elimination half-life ranges from five to fifteen hours
Dosage & Administration
- 0.4 mg (one capsule) daily after meal at night
- Dose may be increased to 0.8 mg (two capsules) once daily after 2 to 4 weeks
- Swallow whole with a glass of water
- Should not be crunched or chewed
Interaction
- Concurrent administration of other alpha1-adrenoceptor antagonists could lead to hypotensive effects
- No interactions with atenolol, enalapril or nifedipine
- Cimetidine may raise plasma levels
- Frusemide may lower plasma levels
- No interactions at the level of hepatic metabolism with certain drugs
- Diclofenac and warfarin may increase elimination rate
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to tamsulosin hydrochloride
- History of orthostatic hypotension
- Severe hepatic insufficiency
- Potential reduction in blood pressure leading to syncope
- Caution in situations requiring alertness
