Indications

  • Treatment of functional symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Pharmacology

  • Selective alpha1 adrenoceptor blocking agent
  • Relaxes smooth muscles in bladder neck and prostate
  • Improves urine flow rate
  • Reduces symptoms of BPH
  • Complete absorption (90%) under fasting conditions
  • Extensively metabolized by cytochrome P 450 enzymes in the liver
  • High plasma protein binding (94% to 99%)
  • Elimination half-life ranges from five to fifteen hours

Dosage & Administration

  • 0.4 mg (one capsule) daily after meal at night
  • Dose may be increased to 0.8 mg (two capsules) once daily after 2 to 4 weeks
  • Swallow whole with a glass of water
  • Should not be crunched or chewed

Interaction

  • Concurrent administration of other alpha1-adrenoceptor antagonists could lead to hypotensive effects
  • No interactions with atenolol, enalapril or nifedipine
  • Cimetidine may raise plasma levels
  • Frusemide may lower plasma levels
  • No interactions at the level of hepatic metabolism with certain drugs
  • Diclofenac and warfarin may increase elimination rate

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to tamsulosin hydrochloride
  • History of orthostatic hypotension
  • Severe hepatic insufficiency
  • Potential reduction in blood pressure leading to syncope
  • Caution in situations requiring alertness

  • Rare occurrence of transient postural symptoms
