Indications
- Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI)
- Urinary tract infections
- Bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
- Clinical efficacy against commonly occurring pathogens
- High stability in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes
Pharmacology
- Third generation cephalosporin antibiotic
- Orally active
- Bactericidal against broad spectrum of bacteria
- Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Highly stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzyme
- About 40% to 50% absorption
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days
- Recommended adult dosage of 200-400 mg daily
- Dosage for children based on age and weight
- Dosage adjustment in severe renal impairment
- Recommended dosage in typhoid
- Special dosage for children less than 6 months
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times noted in some patients
- Caution required in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Mild and self-limiting adverse reactions
- Gastrointestinal disturbances: diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain
- Central nervous system effects: headache, dizziness
- Hypersensitivity reactions: rash, pruritis, urticaria
- Hematological and clinical chemistry effects: thrombocytopenia, leukopenia
- Other possible reactions: genital pruritis, vaginitis

- Use with caution in penicillin-sensitive patients

- Alteration of normal flora of the colon may permit overgrowth of clostridia

- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote exists
- Not significantly removed by dialysis
