DosageRecommendations
- Dosage range for adults: 100-750 mg twice daily
- Infections of the lower and upper urinary tract: 250-500 mg twice daily
- Respiratory tract infections: 250-500 mg twice daily
- Gonorrhea treatment: A single dose of 250 or 500 mg
- Impaired renal function: Dosage adjustment may be required
- Dosage for adolescents and children: 7.5-15 mg/kg/day depending on severity of infection
- Duration of treatment: 5 to 10 days for acute infections
- Extended-release tablet: 1000 mg once daily for uncomplicated urinary tract infection
Pharmacology
- Broad spectrum of activity
- Active against most gram negative aerobic bacteria
- Also active against gram-positive aerobic bacteria
- Bactericidal action results from interference with the enzyme DNA gyrase
- Rapid and well absorption from the G.I. tract
- Widely distributed into body tissues and fluids
- Half-life of about 3.5 hours
- Excretion of 30% to 50% in urine within 24 hours
Administration
- Instructions for the use of Ciprofloxacin IV infusion
Interaction
- Concurrent administration with certain antacids or dairy products should be avoided
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones
