Description

Babykion (Vitamin K-1) is indicated for the prophylaxis and treatment of haemorrhagic disease in newborns, haemorrhage due to severe hypoprothrombinemia, prevention and treatment of bleeding due to vitamin K deficiency. It is a procoagulant factor involved in the post translational carboxylation of clotting factors II (prothrombin), VII, IX and X, clotting inhibitors protein C and protein S.

Indications

  • Prophylaxis and treatment of haemorrhagic disease in the newborn
  • Haemorrhage or risk of haemorrhage as a result of severe hypoprothrombinemia
  • Prevention and treatment of bleeding due to vitamin K deficiency

Pharmacology

Phytomenadione is a procoagulant factor involved in the carboxylation of clotting factors. Lack of Phytomenadione leads to increased tendency to haemorrhagic disease in the newborn. Phytomenadione administration can reverse abnormal coagulation status and bleeding due to Phytomenadione deficiency.

Dosage & Administration

  • 2 mg orally for neonates at or just after birth
  • 5-10 mg orally for children over 1 year of age
  • 1 mg by intravenous injection initially, with further doses as required for therapy
  • 1 mg intramuscularly or intravenously for neonates with special risk factors
  • 3 prophylactic doses of Vitamin K should be administered orally for total protection of the newborns

Interaction

Antagonises the effect of coumarin-type anticoagulants, and coadministration of anticonvulsants can impair its action

Contraindications

Known hypersensitivity to any of its constituents

Side Effects

  • Possible occurrence of anaphylactoid reactions
  • Venous irritation or phlebitis after parenteral use

Precautions & Warnings

Careful monitoring of coagulation parameters is necessary for patients with severely impaired liver function

Keep below 30°C temperature, away from light & moisture, out of the reach of children
