Description
- Oral iron, folic acid, and zinc preparation for the treatment of iron, folic acid, and zinc deficiency
Indications
- Prophylaxis of iron deficiency especially during pregnancy and anemia
- Supplementary zinc and iron for inadequate diet
Pharmacology
- Combination of Ferrous Ascorbate, Folic Acid, and Zinc
- Iron replenishes iron stores and corrects iron deficiency anemia
- Vitamin C enhances iron absorption
- Folic Acid plays a vital role in red blood cell formation
- Essential in pregnancy for the unborn baby's brain and spinal cord development
- Zinc provides nutrition
Dosage and administration
- Adult & elderly: One tablet a day before or after meal or as directed by physician
- In more severe cases, two tablets a day may be required as prescribed by the physician
Interaction
- Iron chelates with tetracycline, so should not be taken within 2 hours of each other
- Occasional gastrointestinal discomfort may be minimized by taking with meals
- Absorption of iron may be impaired by concurrent administrations of penicillamine and antacid
- Risk of zinc accumulation in patients with renal failure
Contraindications
- Haemolytic anaemia patients
- Patients with increased hypersensitivity to any of its components
- Patients with increased body iron content
Side effects
- Mild and transient side effects including epigastric pain, nausea, constipation, vomiting, diarrhea, heartburn
- Allergic sensitization reported following oral and parenteral administration of folic acid
Pregnancy and lactation
- Contact physician if pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or currently breast-feeding
- Avoid administration in first trimester of pregnancy unless definite evidence of iron deficiency is observed
- Prophylaxis of iron deficiency justified during remainder of pregnancy specifically when zinc supplementation is required
Precautions and warnings
- Take care in patients who may develop iron overload
- Failure to respond to treatment may indicate other causes of anemia and should be further investigated
Overdose effects
- Variable clinical course including abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, etc. in acute iron overdosage
