Indications
- Cleansing and irrigating the skin
- Dirty wounds with added surfactant effect
Pharmacology
- Chlorhexidine as antiseptic and disinfectant
- Effective against wide range of organisms
- More active against Gram-positive bacteria
- Cetrimide as quaternary ammonium disinfectant
- Bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
Dosage & Administration
- Rinse area with water
- Apply minimum irrigation necessary
- Paediatric use with care in neonates
- Apply to wound as necessary
- Discard remaining solution after use
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to chlorhexidine or cetrimide
- Do not use for brain, meninges, eyes, perforated eardrum
Side Effects
- Irritative skin reactions
- Hypersensitivity reactions to chlorhexidine
- Cetrimide may have prolonging effect on wound healing process
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Limited data on use in pregnant women
- Poor absorption following topical application
- Unlikely excretion in breast milk
- Rinse nipples thoroughly before breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings
- External use only
- Not for injection, for irrigation only
- Not isotonic and is haemolytic
- Use restricted to infection control and wound cleansing
Overdose Effects
- Accidental ingestion unlikely to cause systemic effects
- High concentrations could cause irritation of gastrointestinal mucosa
- Symptomatic treatment should be employed
- If swallowed, wash out mouth, seek medical advice
