Indications
- Prophylaxis and treatment of haemorrhagic disease in the newborn
- Haemorrhage or risk of haemorrhage as a result of severe hypoprothrombinemia
- Prevention and treatment of bleeding due to vitamin K deficiency
Pharmacology
- Procoagulant factor
- Involved in the carboxylation of clotting factors
- Promotes synthesis of coagulation factors by the liver
Dosage & Administration
- 2 mg orally at or just after birth for Neonates
- 5-10 mg orally for children over 1 year of age
- 1 mg by intravenous injection initially for therapy
- Special dosing for neonates with risk factors
- Total protection with 3 prophylactic doses
Interaction
- Antagonises coumarin-type anticoagulants
- Impairment of action by anticonvulsants
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to any of its constituents
Side Effects
- Possible occurrence of anaphylactoid reactions
- Venous irritation or phlebitis after parenteral use
Precautions & Warnings
- Careful monitoring of coagulation parameters for patients with severely impaired liver function
