Indications
- Prophylaxis and treatment of haemorrhagic disease in the newborn
- Haemorrhage or risk of haemorrhage due to severe hypoprothrombinemia
- Prevention and treatment of bleeding due to vitamin K deficiency
Pharmacology
- Procoagulant factor
- Involved in the carboxylation of clotting factors
- Promotes synthesis of coagulation factors
Dosage & Administration
- Oral administration for neonates at birth and on specific days
- Intravenous or intramuscular administration for neonates with special risk factors
- Different doses for children over 1 year of age
- Initial intravenous injection for therapy with further doses as required
Interaction
- Antagonises the effect of coumarin-type anticoagulants
- Coadministration of anticonvulsants can impair its action
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to any of its constituents
Side Effects
- Possible occurrence of anaphylactoid reactions and venous irritation after parenteral use
Precautions & Warnings
- Careful monitoring of coagulation parameters in patients with severely impaired liver function
