Indications
- Treatment of partial-onset seizures with or without secondary generalisation in adults and adolescents
- Treatment of myoclonic seizures in adults and adolescents with Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy
- Treatment of primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in adults and adolescents with Idiopathic Generalised Epilepsy
Description
- Precise mechanism(s) of antiepileptic effect is unknown
- Protection against secondarily generalized activity from focal seizures
- Inhibition of burst firing without affecting normal neuronal excitability
Dosage
- Recommended starting dose for adults and adolescents from 16 years of age is 250 mg twice daily
- Maximum dose is 1500 mg twice daily
Administration
- Tablets must be taken orally, swallowed with sufficient quantity of liquid
- Administered in two equally divided doses
Interaction
- Not influencing serum concentrations of existing antiepileptic medicinal products
- Possible decrease in methotrexate clearance when administered concomitantly
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance or other pyrrolidone derivatives or to any of the excipients
Side Effects
- Most common adverse reactions include somnolence, asthenia, infection, dizziness in adults
- Fatigue, aggression, nasal congestion, decreased appetite, irritability in pediatric patients
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Excreted in human breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Dose adjustment may be required in patients with renal impairment
- Rare cases of decreased blood cell counts described
- Suicidal thoughts and behaviour reported in patients treated with anti-epileptic agents
Use in Special Populations
- Adjustment of the dose in elderly patients with compromised renal function
- Dose must be individualized according to renal function in patients with renal impairment
Overdose Effects
- Somnolence, agitation, depressed level of consciousness observed with overdoses
- No specific antidote, treatment will be symptomatic
