Indications
- Monotherapy in the treatment of partial seizures in adults
- Adjunctive therapy in the treatment of partial seizures in adults
- Monotherapy in the treatment of partial seizures in children aged 4-16 years

Pharmacology
- Mechanism of action based on blockade of voltage-sensitive sodium channels
- Stabilization of hyper excited neural membranes
- Inhibition of repetitive neuronal firing
- Diminishment of propagation of synaptic impulses
Dosage & Administration
- Initial dose for adults: 600 mg/day, given twice-a-day
- Maximum daily dose for adults: 1200-2400 mg/day
- Initiation dose for pediatrics: 8 to 10 mg/kg/day, given twice-a-day
- Maximum maintenance dose for pediatrics: dependent upon patient weight
Interaction
- Inhibition of the enzyme CYP2C19
- Potential interactions with antiepileptic drugs metabolised by CYP2C19
- Interactions with hormonal contraceptives
- Effect on AUC of felodipine
- Decrease in bioavailability of MHD with verapamil
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance or any excipients
Side Effects
- Common adverse reactions: somnolence, headache, dizziness, diplopia, nausea, vomiting, fatigue
- Rare occurrence of hyponatremia
- Reports of class I hypersensitivity reactions including rash, pruritus, urticaria, angioedema, anaphylaxis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Potential to cause serious birth defects
- Risk of bleeding disorders in newborns
- Precautionary use of vitamin K1 in the last weeks of pregnancy and in the newborn
- Excretion of Oxcarbazepine and its metabolite in breast milk, cautionary advice for breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution with alcohol consumption during therapy
- Gradual withdrawal to minimize potential of increased seizure frequency
