Indications

Pharmacology
- Inhibits microsomal protein synthesis in susceptible organisms
- Binds to donor site on 50S subunit of bacterial ribosome
- Prevents translocation to the donor site
- Active against most Gram-positive bacteria, Chlamydia, some Gram-negative bacteria and Mycoplasmas

Interaction
- Contraindicated with HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors
- Contraindicated with gastroprokinetic agents
- Contraindicated with ergot alkaloids
- Contraindicated with antipsychotics
- Contraindicated with anti-gout agents
- Not recommended with antiarrhythmics drugs
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to clarithromycin or erythromycin
- History of cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction associated with prior use of clarithromycin

Pregnancy & Lactation

Precautions & Warnings
- Discontinue if severe acute hypersensitivity reactions occur
- Avoid in patients with known QT prolongation
- Avoid in patients receiving drugs known to prolong the QT interval
- Discontinue if signs and symptoms of hepatitis occur
- Increased risk of all-cause mortality in patients with coronary artery disease
Use in Special Populations
- Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients 6 months and older
- Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients 20 months and older with advanced HIV infection
Overdose Effects
- Ingestion of large amounts can produce gastro-intestinal symptoms
- Adverse reactions accompanying overdosage should be treated promptly
