Indications

  • Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus
  • Indicated for overweight patients
  • Can be used in adults as monotherapy or in combination with other oral antidiabetic agents or insulin
  • Can be used in children from 10 years of age and adolescents
  • Reduces diabetic complications in overweight type 2 diabetic adult patients treated with metformin as first-line therapy after diet failure

Pharmacology

  • Biguanide type oral antihyperglycemic drug
  • Lowers both basal and postprandial plasma glucose levels
  • Decreases hepatic glucose production
  • Decreases intestinal absorption of glucose
  • Improves insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization

Interaction
