Indications
- Treatment of topical bacterial infections
- Effective in atopic, contact stasis and infections, eczematoid dermatitis, neurodermatitis, eczema, anogenital pruritus
- Adjunct in certain pyodermas such as impetigo
- Useful during specific systemic antibiotic therapy for certain infections
Pharmacology
- Bacitracin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis
- Active against gram-positive bacteria
- Neomycin binds to the bacterial ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis
- Active against many gram-negative aerobes and some strains of staphylococci
Dosage & Administration
- Ointment should be applied two to three times daily
- Dusting Powder can be applied up to 4 times daily
- Area for application should be cleaned gently before use
Interaction
- Bacitracin Zinc increases risk of nephrotoxicity when used with other nephrotoxic drugs
- Neomycin Sulphate has additive nephrotoxic and neurotoxic effects with certain drugs
- May impair the absorption of other drugs
- May alter INR when given with anticoagulants
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any of its components
Side Effects
- Usually well tolerated
- Rare allergic reactions may occur
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to fetus
- Safe use during lactation not established
Precautions & Warnings
- Should not be used on large open wounds or severely injured skin
- Not recommended for treatment of otitis externa with perforated eardrum
- Self-medication for deep wounds should be advised after consulting a physician
- Discontinue use and consult physician if condition persists or worsens after 1 week
Use in Special Populations
- Suitable for use in children at the same dose as adults
- Dose should be reduced in infants
- Not recommended for use in neonates
