Dosage Information
- Initial dose of 5-10 mg once daily for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder
- Daily dosage adjustment based on individual clinical status within the range of 5-20 mg daily
- Maximum dose of 20 mg daily
Interaction
- May antagonize effects of levodopa and dopamine agonists
- Certain drugs may increase or inhibit clearance of Olanzapine
- Caution with concomitant use of centrally acting drugs and alcohol
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to any ingredient
- Known risk for narrow-angle glaucoma
Side Effects
- Common: somnolence, weight gain, increased appetite, elevated glucose and triglyceride levels, dizziness, akathisia
- Others: Parkinson's disease, dyskinesia, orthostatic hypotension, mild and transient anticholinergic effects, asthenia, edema, photosensitivity reaction
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use only if potential benefits justify potential risk to the fetus
- Patients advised to notify physician if pregnant or intending to become pregnant during treatment
- Not recommended for breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings
- Cautious use in patients with history of seizures, low leukocyte/neutrophil counts, conditions associated with seizures, impaired hepatic function
- Caution with hazardous machinery operation, especially in the elderly
Use in Special Populations
- Not studied in subjects under 18 years of age
- Starting dose for elderly patients (age 65 and over): 5 mg/day
- Starting dose for patients with hepatic or renal impairment: 5 mg/day
