Indications

  • Treatment of mild to moderate infections in adults and adolescents
  • Acute Bacterial Exacerbation of Chronic Bronchitis
  • Community Acquired Pneumonia
  • Pharyngitis
  • Tonsillitis
  • Uncomplicated Skin and Skin-Structure Infections

Pharmacology

  • Broad spectrum third generation cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Prodrug hydrolyzed by esterases
  • Bactericidal activity against gram-positive and gram-negative pathogens
  • Inhibition of cell wall synthesis via affinity for penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs)

Dosage & Administration

  • Should be taken after meals
  • 400 mg twice daily for 14 days for Community-Acquired Pneumonia
  • 400 mg twice daily for 10 days for Acute Exacerbation of Chronic Bronchitis
  • 200 mg twice daily for 10 days for Pharyngotonsillitis and Acute Sinusitis
  • 200 mg twice daily for 10 days for Uncomplicated Skin and Soft Structure Infections

Interaction

  • Reduced oral absorption with antacids and Famotidine
  • Increased plasma exposure with probenecid co-administration
  • No effect on the pharmacokinetics of ethinyl estradiol

Contraindications

  • Known allergy to cephalosporin class of antibiotics or any of its components
  • Contains sodium caseinate, a milk protein

  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women

Precautions & Warnings

  • Not recommended for prolonged antibiotic treatment
  • Unlikely to provide benefit in absence of proven bacterial infection
  • Increases risk of development of drug-resistant bacteria

Use in Special Populations

  • Not recommended for pediatric patients less than 12 years of age
  • No dose adjustments in geriatric patients with normal renal function
  • Dose adjustments for patients with renal insufficiency
  • No dose adjustments for patients with mild or moderate hepatic impairment

Overdose Effects

  • Adverse effects may include nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, diarrhea, convulsions
  • Hemodialysis may aid in removal from the body, particularly if renal function is compromised
