Thiocard 15 mg (Tablet)

Indications

• Hypertension management
• Adjunctive therapy for edema in congestive heart failure
• Adjunctive therapy for edema in hepatic cirrhosis
• Adjunctive therapy for edema in corticosteroid therapy
• Adjunctive therapy for edema in estrogen therapy

Pharmacology

• Thiazide-type diuretic-antihypertensive
• Treatment of hypertension
• Adjunctive therapy for renal disease
• Adjunctive therapy for mild to moderate congestive heart failure
• Adjunctive therapy for ascites due to stable liver cirrhosis

Dosage & Administration

• Initiate therapy with lowest possible dose
• Titrate dose for maximum therapeutic benefit
• Administer as single dose daily or every other day
• Usual adult dose is 25 to 50 mg daily
• Clinically useful dosage range is 12.5 to 50 mg daily

Interaction

• Caution in patients with impaired hepatic function
• Cautious dosage schedule in severe coronary or cerebral ateriosderosis
• Interactions with antihypertensive agents
• Interactions with digitalis
• Interactions with corticosteroids
• Interactions with NSAIDs
• Interactions with antineoplastic agents
• Interactions with calcium salts

Contraindications

• Anuria
• Severe renal failure
• Severe hepatic failure
• Refractory hypokalemia
• Enhanced potassium loss conditions
• Hypersensitivity to Chlorthalidone and sulfonamide derivatives

Side Effects

• Hypokalemia at higher doses
• Hyperuricemia
• Rise in blood lipids
• Hyponatremia
• Hypomagnesemia
• Hyperglycemia
• Intrahepatic cholestasis

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Avoid use in pregnancy
• Avoid use in lactating mothers

Precautions & Warnings

• Reduce dosage in moderate renal failure
• Avoid use in advanced renal failure
• Risk of precipitating hepatic encephalopathy in liver cirrhosis patients
• Better to avoid use in pregnancy
• Avoid use in lactating mothers

Overdose Effects

• Symptoms of acute overdosage
• Supportive treatment
• Gastric lavage recommended
