Indications
- Mild to moderate infections
- Adults and adolescents (12 years of age or older)
- Bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
- Community acquired pneumonia
- Pharyngitis
- Tonsillitis
- Uncomplicated skin and skin-structure infections
Pharmacology
- Preparation of Cefditoren Pivoxil
- Broad spectrum third generation cephalosporin antibiotic
- Prodrug hydrolyzed by esterases
- Antibacterial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative pathogens
- Inhibition of cell wall synthesis
- Stable in the presence of various ß-lactamases
Dosage & Administration
- Taken after meals
- Community-acquired pneumonia: 400 mg twice daily for 14 days
- Acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis: 400 mg twice daily for 10 days
- Pharyngotonsillitis and acute sinusitis: 200 mg twice daily for 10 days
- Uncomplicated skin and soft structure infections: 200 mg twice daily for 10 days
Interaction
- Antacids and Famotidine (intravenous administration) reduce oral absorption
- Co-administration of probenecid increases plasma exposure
- No effect on the pharmacokinetics of ethinyl estradiol
Contraindications
- Known allergy to the cephalosporin class of antibiotics or any of its components
- Contains sodium caseinate, a milk protein
- Not recommended for patients with milk protein hypersensitivity

- Pregnancy category B
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women

Precautions & Warnings
- Not recommended for prolonged antibiotic treatment
- Unlikely to provide benefit without proven bacterial infection
- Increases risk of drug-resistant bacteria
Use in Special Populations
- Not recommended for pediatric patients less than 12 years of age
- No dose adjustments necessary in geriatric patients
- Dose adjustments based on renal function
- No dose adjustments necessary for mild to moderate hepatic impairment
Overdose Effects
- Adverse effects include nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, diarrhea, and convulsions
- Potential aid from hemodialysis
