Indications
- Single and mixed infestations of hookworm, roundworm, threadworm, whipworm, strongyloides, tapeworm, opisthorchi, hydatid
Description
- Benzimidazole anthelmintic
- Active against most nematodes and some cestodes
- Vermicidal, ovicidal, and larvicidal activity
- Inhibitory effect on tubulin polymerization
Pharmacology
- Broad spectrum anthelmintic
- Exhibits vermicidal, ovicidal, and larvicidal activities
- Blocks glucose uptake in susceptible helminths
- Depletes energy level in helminths
- Binds and inhibits parasite tubulin polymerization
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended doses for adults, children over 2 years, and children of 1-2 years
- Special dosage for patients with hydatid disease
- Treatment regimen for cystic echinococcosis and alveolar echinococcosis
Interaction
- No reported pharmacodynamic or pharmacokinetic interactions
Contraindications
- Not recommended for neonates
- Possible dose reduction for children under 10 kg
- Avoid use in pregnant women
- No evidence for altered dosage in renal, hepatic, or cardiac failure
